The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program provides all children in participating Seattle Public Elementary schools with a variety of free fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the school day. It is an effective and creative way of introducing fresh fruits and vegetables as healthy snack options.
The goals of the program are to:
• Create healthier school environments by providing healthier food choices
• Expand the variety of fruits and vegetables children experience
• Increase children’s fruit and vegetable consumption
• Make a difference in children’s diets to impact their present and future health
.
Full Circle’s support includes interviewing staff at already-participating schools to see how the program is going, and making recommendations for improvements. We also actively recruit new schools to expand the number of children reached by this program. Our work puts us in touch with Principals, Teachers, Lunch Room Staff, Custodians, as well as district administrators in charge of nutrition services and sustainability. (The City of Seattle’s funding for consultant support comes from the Sweetened Beverage Tax.)
