Carpet Processing, Recovery & Economic Development

Early in this century, Full Circle’s David Stitzhal represented the Northwest Product Stewardship Council at a groundbreaking series of national stakeholder meetings. The assembled group created a memorandum of understanding outlining carpet industry product stewardship goals. Sadly, those goals were long ago unmet and swept under the rug, but they set the stage. This voluminous waste stream remains a topic of state policy discussions and local economic development efforts.

Continuing work in this sector, Full Circle staff Goidel and Stitzhal supported the Carpet Strategy Project sponsored by the City of Seattle Solid Waste Utility and King County’s Link-Up Program. We interviewed dozens of stakeholders, including local collectors, processors, national manufacturers, and retailers to develop a strategy establishing regional recycling infrastructure and end-markets for carpet waste generated in the Pacific Northwest..
